“Dear girl, go out!”: A young Palestinian escapes an Israeli strike

These are the early hours of Monday 26 May. An aerial attack that Israel says that it is aimed at a militant control center has just hit a former school where dozens of families were protected. Eighteen children were killed in the attack, according to local emergency services. And this scene of a girl who tries to escape the flames is about to become a new symbol of the toll of the war on the youngest in Gaza. We interviewed witnesses and obtained unpublished videos of the consequences of the attack. And we found the girl. It's called Hanin Al-Wadie. The 5 -year -old boy survived but he lost both his parents and his younger sister in the attack, according to other relatives. Parts of his body are seriously burned. Hussein Mohsen, who manages one of the ambulance services of Gaza, was the one who saved Hanin and helped confirm his identity. Mohsen said that a metal door, hot red with torrid heat separated him from the girl. We found Hanin who recovered from second and third degree burns at the Arabic hospital in Al-Ahli in the north of Gaza. When Israeli military operations intensified last month, she and her family took refuge at school. Hanan's uncle, who is a trained nurse, now takes care of her. Another girl, Ward Al-Sheikh Khalil, who was wrong in some media relationships such as the one running through the flames, was injured in the attack. Mohsen told us he also saved her from a pile of rubble. Ward, who is five years old, was interviewed by a journalist who works for the state press agency in Türkiye later that day. He spoke of how his mother and five brothers were killed in the strike. They were among 31 victims in total, according to the Gaza emergency services. It is not clear whether the dead included fighters or militants. Hamas has already hidden among civilians. The Israeli army did not develop when she was contacted by the New York Times on the details of the attack. He referred to his only public declaration on the attack, stating that in his effort to hit a command center and militant control, he had taken numerous measures to mitigate the risk of damaging civilians, including the use of precise ammunition. Our analysis of the images of the consequences has shown fragments of an American guided bomb that the Israeli army has constantly used in Gaza. The GBU-39 are designed to affect objectives with greater precision. In this school site, more than half of the victims were children, adding an growing share of the deaths among the youngest generations of Gaza. The Israeli army also refused to further process the choice of the weapon and the high number of victims among children. Hanin is facing a long recovery. For now, he continues to heal with his uncle by his side.
